Dulce de Leche Casero (Homemade Milk Jam)
The golden treasure of Argentine desserts — a slow-cooked, creamy milk caramel that is used in almost every sweet treat.
Cuisine: Argentina
Ingredients
- 2 liters whole milk
- 500g sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 vanilla bean or 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a large heavy-bottomed pot, combine milk, sugar, and vanilla.
- Bring to a boil, then add baking soda (it will foam).
- Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon.
- After about 1.5 to 2 hours, the mixture will thicken and turn a deep caramel color.
- Continue stirring constantly at the end to prevent burning until it reaches the desired consistency.
