  1. In a large heavy-bottomed pot, combine milk, sugar, and vanilla.

  4. After about 1.5 to 2 hours, the mixture will thicken and turn a deep caramel color.
  5. Continue stirring constantly at the end to prevent burning until it reaches the desired consistency.
