Maryland Steamed Blue Crabs
Live blue crabs steamed with Old Bay and beer, served on newspaper-covered picnic tables — the Maryland summer ritual that defines Chesapeake culture.

Ingredients
- 12 live blue crabs
- 2 bottles beer (lager)
- 2 cups water
- 1/2 cup Old Bay Seasoning
- 2 tbsp coarse salt
- Butter for dipping
- Additional Old Bay for the table
Instructions
- Combine beer, water, and half the Old Bay in the bottom of a large pot with a steamer rack.
- Place crabs on the steamer rack (they can be stacked).
- Sprinkle remaining Old Bay and salt liberally over crabs.
- Cover tightly. Bring to boil.
- Steam 20-25 minutes until shells are bright orange-red.
- Pour out on newspaper-covered table.
- Eat with wooden mallets and small picks.
