Maryland Steamed Blue Crabs

Live blue crabs steamed with Old Bay and beer, served on newspaper-covered picnic tables — the Maryland summer ritual that defines Chesapeake culture.

Instructions

  1. Combine beer, water, and half the Old Bay in the bottom of a large pot with a steamer rack.
  2. Place crabs on the steamer rack (they can be stacked).
  3. Sprinkle remaining Old Bay and salt liberally over crabs.
  4. Cover tightly. Bring to boil.
  5. Steam 20-25 minutes until shells are bright orange-red.
  6. Pour out on newspaper-covered table.
  7. Eat with wooden mallets and small picks.
