Mint Julep

Bourbon, sugar, fresh mint, and crushed ice in a silver cup — the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby and the definitive drink of the American South.

Cuisine: United States

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Place mint leaves and simple syrup in a julep cup (silver is traditional) or rocks glass.
  2. Gently muddle mint — press, don't shred. You want the oils, not pulp.
  3. Pack cup tightly with crushed ice.
  4. Pour bourbon over ice.
  5. Stir until the cup frosts on the outside.
  6. Top with more crushed ice (dome it over the top).
  7. Garnish with a generous bouquet of mint sprigs.
  8. Serve with a short straw so your nose is in the mint.
