Mint Julep
Bourbon, sugar, fresh mint, and crushed ice in a silver cup — the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby and the definitive drink of the American South.
Cuisine: United States
Ingredients
- 2.5 oz bourbon
- 1 tbsp simple syrup (or 2 tsp sugar dissolved in 1 tbsp water)
- 8-10 fresh mint leaves
- Crushed ice
- Fresh mint sprig for garnish
Instructions
- Place mint leaves and simple syrup in a julep cup (silver is traditional) or rocks glass.
- Gently muddle mint — press, don't shred. You want the oils, not pulp.
- Pack cup tightly with crushed ice.
- Pour bourbon over ice.
- Stir until the cup frosts on the outside.
- Top with more crushed ice (dome it over the top).
- Garnish with a generous bouquet of mint sprigs.
- Serve with a short straw so your nose is in the mint.
