Indigenous Wild Rice Soup
A creamy, nutty soup featuring "manoomin" (wild rice), an essential grain for Indigenous peoples in the Great Lakes region.

Ingredients
- 1 cup wild rice
- 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 onion, diced
- 2 carrots, diced
- 1 cup mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1 cup heavy cream
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Rinse wild rice and simmer in broth for 45-50 minutes until tender. In a separate pan, sauté onion, carrots, and mushrooms in butter until soft. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in 2 cups of the rice cooking liquid. Simmer until thickened. Add the cooked rice, remaining broth, and cream. Heat through and season with salt and pepper.
